03-05 Love and Power of Family

In a heartwarming showcase at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., attendees were moved by “Children of Shanghai,” a documentary revealing the transformative journeys of Chinese children who found new beginnings with local families after being abandoned due to the one-child policy. Once facing severe delays, these children, now thriving adults, share their stories of redemption—from excelling in technology to winning Special Olympic gold, illustrating the profound impact of family love.

The one-child policy, enacted in 1980 to control population growth, led to the abandonment of many, particularly girls and those with disabilities, placing nearly 2 million children in institutional care by 1998. However, the documentary and ongoing efforts emphasize the resilience of the human spirit and the critical role of family care over institutionalization. Since 2016, with the end of the one-child policy, and through the dedicated work of initiatives like Care for Children, over a million children have transitioned to family-based care, now recognized as the preferred model in China.

This story of transformation and hope underscores the power of family and community in nurturing children’s potential, aligning with the Christian value of caring for the vulnerable. It serves as a testament to God’s design for family and the boundless capacity for love to overcome adversity.
